The question is typed straight onto the painting, in small labels laid over sleeping figures, heavy drapery, and a woman leaning in. Clearly the world needs poetry desperately — for its power to change things through empathy and understanding — and this is precisely what a poem does to an ordinary scene: it asks something of it. Muted ochre, olive, a chalky blue, all of it softened further by the fall of the cloth.
